My Style of Bodywork

Ultimately my goal is to help, to help empower you.  So you are better able to take charge of your own healing process and achieve your goals.  Your goal may be pain relief, relaxation to achieve more restful sleep, support a training program to run a marathon in the spring or one of many others.  People of all ages (my youngest client is a toddler and my oldest is in her 80's) come to see me for a large variety of reasons.

My role is to help facilitate your healing; this is achieved through a process.  Chances are, unless you have a recent injury, you didn't get to where you are overnight; so you likely will take time to reach your goal.  We begin with a discussion about why you are coming to see me.  Next we decide on a tentative treatment plan to work toward your goal; as your session progresses, I may ask questions as I palpate and massage your soft tissue.  Your treatment plan is flexible and may include one or many techniques to address the issue(s) that brought you to my office.  Some goals require little participation on the part of the client:  stress relief for example, typically requires a passive participant; whereas someone coming to me for pain relief may need to do some breathing exercises while I work on them and perhaps some soaking and/or stretching at home (which I teach how to do) on their own between sessions.  I may make suggestions about what you may be doing in your day to day that could be contributing to what brought you to see me.  We will work as a team to help you achieve your goal(s).

Each bodywork session is different, both from person to person and even from session to session on the same person, depending on the needs and wishes of the client that day.  Before beginning any session we will determine what you most need/want worked on and your goals for that session.  A typical session involves a short dialogue between myself and you, during which time we talk about how you've felt since your last treatment and what needs attention that day.  We will then decide on a tentative treatment plan; taking into consideration your input, my knowledge and intuition and what is your ultimate goal we are working toward.

For example:  if your goal is stress relief/relaxation I may suggest a full body massage, energy work, craniosacral therapy session or a combination of those; or if your goal is to get rid of pain in a particular area, my suggestion might be a combination of techniques focusing on possible causes of your pain.  Children with ADHD typically respond really well to energy work, Brain Therapy as well as cranio-sacral therapy.

Most Sessions are a combination of a few different techniques.  Some clients like to experience one technique or another on it's own, either because their doctor has suggested it or they've heard about it's benefits.  The choice is yours.  During any session you, the client, are in charge.  It is your body and your money you are spending.  My goal is to help you feel better, and empower you.

During your session (with me or any other therapist) if at any time you feel uncomfortable in ANY way, or pain of any kind, please let me know immediately; this can be valuable information to me as a therapist.  Some massage techniques can be uncomfortable, but they shouldn't ever be out and out painful...causing you to clench your teeth and/or curl your toes, basically creating more work elsewhere in your body.

Every body reacts differently to pressure and different combinations of techniques.  What works for your sister may or may not work for you.  Therapists can not read your mind.

Here's what I'm trained in that I practice:

  • therapeutic Swedish massage
  • deep tissue massage
  • neuromuscular therapy (St. John Method)
  • craniosacral therapy (Upledger)
  • Massage Cupping
  • Brain therapy for children and adults (Dr Barry Gillespie)
